Carmen has been active in the event decorating, balloon decor, floral and gift industries for over 28-years. She is a multi-award winner designer. Her passion for over a decade has been teaching others how to do amazing event decor, that she teaches at the Event Decorating Academy, which she owns in Hollywood, FL.
Carmen was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY to Puerto Rican parents. Her career began when Carmen opened a party and gift shop in 1991. Through hard work and dedication, that small store grew into Precious Times, a floral and gift basket shop at Southridge Mall, a major upscale shopping center in Greendale WI. At the same time she owned and managed Pretty Weddings and Events, LLC, a decorating firm that also did work as Balloons Milwaukee, LLC. Carmen was invited as a featured artist at the "Gold for Life" a charitable fund raiser held by the real estate moguals, The Jills, at a mansion on Palm Island for the opening & celebration of Art Basel 2012 opening night. Despite catastrophic damage to most of her work when a roofing contractor allowed hot tar to pour into her shop just a week before the event, being the consummate professional, Carmen presented her gold collection of latex wearable art that evening. Pioneer Balloon company (Qualatex Balloons) commissioned Carmen to build a unique piece for Ted & Betty Vlamis. A piece that will celebrate their 40th anniversary, and the 90th year of The Pioneer Balloon Company.
For three years, 2005 to 2007 Carmen designed and produced Balloon-A-Palooza, which at the time was one of the largest balloon art exhibits in the nation.
This art exhibit held at The Mitchell Park Domes in Milwaukee Wisconsin featured large scale sculptures made of balloons. Over nine thousand people the attended this amazing event its first year. Attendance grew to over 12,000 attendees the following year. In its final year Betallic provided the over 130,000 balloons used for this event. All the proceeds from the event benefit The Milwaukee County Parks to help save the parks and kid's programs. The week long event was a hands-on event for balloon decorators and gave them the chance to learn and create amazing large scale designs in art exhibit form. In May 2010 Carmen was honored to be featured on Don Francisco's Sábado Gigante and meet his wonderful staff.
Univision's TV show featured a balloon sculpture building contest between three well know Latino soap opera stars on the “Si Se Puede” or “Yes, it is possible” segment. Carmen taught the Novelas (Soap Opera) actors Rafael Marcante, Julio Mannino & Aitor Iturroz how to build a large balloon sculpture for four days at the Event Decorating Academy. Carmen prepared them to compete live on the TV show Sabado Gigante to win $5,000 for a family in need. Carmen was super proud of the outcome. Having the actors ask carmen for an autograph on the designs she made for them was one of her great proud moments. (video)
